Bio
In July 2022, I joined AU as a Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Health, Risk, and Society. I am also a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress (CAP), a non-partisan policy institute in Washington DC. From 2014-2021, I served as the U.S. Programs Director for the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (STBF) in Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to joining the foundation, from 2003-2013 as faculty in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, I co-founded and directed the Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH) research program. Among my favorite honors is the 2012 UCSF Academic Senate Distinction in Mentoring Award and the 2021 Charles S Schultz Lifetime Achievement from the American Public Health Association. In 2015, my wife and I were awarded the Roger Baldwin Civil Libertarians of the Year Award from the ACLU-Nebraska for challenging the Nebraska ban on same-sex marriage. We live in DC with our dog Jackson.
