The Kogod Financial Services and IT Lab is located in the Kogod building expansion in room T-51. The new hands-on learning facility is comprised of:

  • A 1,000 square foot main room with 38 networked stations with access to real time data feeds from Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg, databases such as Compustat and CRSP, and software application, @Risk
  • Large LCD screens providing real market information and teaching material
  • Two overhead projectors for classroom use
  • Document camera
  • Annotation tablet
  • Combo DVD player and VHS VCR
  • Microphones and public address systems for large venues
  • Two network printers
  • Copier and scanner
  • Video conference portable unit
  • Mini-lab with 10 stations, with access to the same databases and software in the FSIT Lab (located in room T-54)
  • Meeting room
  • Three breakout rooms
  • Behavioral research lab with 12 stations

The FSIT Lab offers access to many financial tools and databases such as Thomson One, Bloomberg, Argus, SDC Platinum, WRDS, and @Risk, among other resources. Students and faculty may consult the databases individually or with the assistance of a team member.

In addition to email or telephone assistance, we offer intensive one-on-one assistance and undivided attention. Faculty members who want to find out more about the FSIT Lab's databases, but can't come to us: Don't worry, we will come to you.

The FSIT Lab is offering a program in which faculty can make an appointment for one of the FSIT Lab team members to come to your office at your convenience to demonstrate all the tools. Please email Professor Octavian Ionici, Director of the FSIT Lab with any questions at fsitlab@american.edu to describe your request or question. Your input can help us support the curriculum and anticipate future needs.

Professors are encouraged to bring their classes to the FSIT Lab for sessions targeting research and project methods as well as materials for specific disciplines. Faculty can request an instruction session for their classes on using the tools available in the FSIT Lab. Most faculty request these classes early in the semester to acquaint their students with the many types of resources available for their research and projects.

In addition to supporting class instruction, the FSIT Lab can provide you with accurate and timely data for research projects.

We encourage all students to view the FSIT Calendar and enroll in one of the fsitlab@american.edu.

Selected students with a strong desire to learn about the state-of-the-art financial software applications and basic database skills hold hours in the FSIT Lab to assist users. Financial Data Teaching Assistants provide guidance on using Bloomberg, Thomson ONE and other software packages. This is an amazing opportunity to sharpen and refine your financial and presentation skills.

Although recruiting for these positions is at the beginning of each semester, applications are also accepted year around. Email fsitlab@american.edu for more information.
