Eagle Tales: Minding the Sidelines and AU’s Bottom Line

AU boasts about 1,900 dedicated staff members. Meet one here: Nicole Bresnahan, associate vice president of financial operations in the Finance and Treasury Executive Office.

I’ve worked at AU for 13 years. Before that, I worked as an auditor at Deloitte.

My job is to oversee the Controller’s Office, which includes accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, procurement, tax compliance, and payroll. I also oversee grants, contracts, the post-award and financial sides of the house, and student accounts. If you’re getting paid at this university, I manage one of the departments responsible for paying you.

A typical day includes working on a lot of different strategic committees across campus, including Middle States and the Workday project. Right now, I’m doing a deep dive on expenses by [conducting] a full review of revenue and expenses across campus. My office is at 3201 New Mexico Avenue.

My go-to lunch spot near my office is Wagshal’s or Chef Geoff’s. If I’m on campus, I love getting a bowl at Halal Shack. My favorite place on campus to steal a quiet moment is the Woods-Brown Amphitheater or sitting on one of the benches on the quad. Campus is at its prettiest right after Campus Beautification Day. My go-to order at the Dav is coffee with cream.

I show my AU spirit by wearing AU gear. My family rocks it too. My oldest son wears his Change Can’t Wait socks as [frequently] as I can wash them. The people who helped show me the ropes are Shannon Olson-Ogburn, director of university and capital accounting; former CFO Doug Kudravetz; and current CFO Bronté Burleigh-Jones. All three have made sure I’m learning along the way.

I found my community at AU by building connections with people across campus. I’m very fortunate that the areas I manage touch everything. I really make sure I am getting out into the community and meeting people. My favorite day of the workweek is Tuesday, when my whole team is here in-person.

My work-from-home rituals include being on kid duty and helping everybody get out the door. I also make my lunch because I have a little more time. I do my Zoom meetings from my office, where my background includes art from the Katzen Arts Center gallery and a portrait of me drawn by my 12-year-old son several years ago.

When I’m not at work, you can find me on the sidelines at games for my kids, who are 12, 10, and 8. All three of them are very active, and we’re in the middle of the baseball, softball, and spring soccer seasons right now.

The last great book I read was Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. The last great show I watched was The Last Dance. The last great meal I ate was at Oak Steakhouse in Alexandria, where I live.

If I didn’t work at AU, I’d be a nurse. When I left Deloitte, I had enrolled in courses to be a nurse, but then I got the job at AU and ended up loving it here. I work with an incredible group of people. They are passionate about the mission and supporting our students, faculty, and staff.
