About the Center for Security, Innovation & New Technology

The Center for Security, Innovation and New Technology is an interdisciplinary program committed to advancing research and policy on security and power dilemmas stemming from digital and emerging technologies. Based at the School of International Service at American University, our faculty and students work on issues such as interstate cyber conflict, the proliferation and mitigation of spyware, disinformation and foreign influence operations, and the geopolitics of frontier technologies. We combine technical analysis with social science frameworks to contextualize contemporary policy debates about the challenges and opportunities of digital and emerging technologies.

What we do

Research

We conduct research on the opportunities and challenges of emerging and digital technologies. We examine a wide variety of issues at the nexus of new technology and global security, from the escalating cyber threats between nation-states to the shifting geopolitical dynamics surrounding frontier technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Engagement

Located in Washington, DC, we are committed to informing policy processes at the intersection of new technology and security. Our events, publications, and workshops bring together a broad community of professionals to develop interdisciplinary and policy-oriented ideas. Through student and fellow programs, we train the next generation of practitioners on translating theory into practice.

Community

Our community is comprised of a diverse group of individuals who aim to produce innovative, policy-oriented research around new technology and global security. We collaborate with corporations, governments, non-governmental organizations, think tanks, and other academic institutions to build bridges across knowledge and networks.
