Camerota Steps Up to Expand Access to Experiential Opportunities at SOC
American University School of Communication (AU SOC) alumna Alisyn Camerota has given SOC a generous Change Can't Wait campaign gift to support experiential learning. Camerota (SOC/BA ‘88) has stayed involved as a dedicated alumna. She has been a mentor for SOC’s prestigious Alumni Mentoring Program and has supported and hosted the school’s New York Career Intensive experiential learning program. Camerota’s time at AU has given rise to a stellar broadcasting career during which she has worked for FOX News and CNN, and covered various events from terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and political campaigns. She is a two-time Emmy award winner, author, and advisor to multiple non-profits.
Camerota’s gift will support access to SOC’s myriad experiential learning programs for students across the school. These programs include everything from internships to courses that deliver professional networking and portfolio-building opportunities to study abroad. There are also unique programs, designed and led by SOC faculty, including the L.A. and NYC Career Intensives, the Investigative Reporting Workshop, and Classroom in the Wild.
Dean Sam Fulwood said, "In order to fulfill its mission, SOC must be a school that provides meaningful experiential opportunities to all students, and Alisyn's generosity supports that goal.”
Camerota says she still draws on skills she learned in her own experiential learning at AU. From working at the campus television station to internships she says, “I think that AU is so good at connecting students with real people in the real professional tracks that they want to get into, and I learned things in my internship that I still apply every day.”
SOC is grateful for alumni like Camerota who are committed to ensuring that students have access to valuable hands-on opportunities while at AU. Just as experiential learning at AU prepared her, Camerota’s gift will open doors for students and help propel them into changemaking careers. Join alumni like Camerota, Jennifer Collins and Derek McGinty who are supporting access to experiential learning at SOC through the Change Can't Wait campaign.
