Dear AU community,

We hope your semester is off to a productive and healthy start. We want to ensure that members of our community are aware of the University’s COVID protocols and share available health resources particularly given the present forecast of increased cases across the country this fall.

The following protocols have been in effect since May 11, 2023, when we moved to an endemic phase of COVID, and were developed in consultation with members of the AU community and the DC Department of Health. We continue to monitor and follow CDC guidelines.

Vaccinations
COVID vaccinations and boosters are strongly recommended, but not required for AU community members and guests. AU will be providing the new Moderna COVID booster, approved today by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, on campus during our seasonal flu shot clinics, as soon as they become available for distribution.  These vaccinations will be offered, free of charge, with an insurance card, as part of our efforts to support the health of our community. Appointments are required. AhealthyU will also be hosting additional flu shots clinics for staff with Kaiser Permanente insurance. Additionally, vaccination and booster shots are readily available near campus, including pharmacies and grocery stores, and can be located on the CDC’s website.

Testing
Free rapid tests are currently available on main campus via the COVID test vending machines in Butler Pavilion, the WCL student lounge outside of Pence Law Library, in the Spring Valley Building lobby, and 4401 Connecticut Avenue building, Level 1 Parking elevator lobby. Antigen tests are also available at the Student Health Center in McCabe Hall during operating hours.

Masks
Masks are optional, including in classrooms. Masks are currently available on request at locations on main campus, the Spring Valley Building, the Washington College of Law, and 4401 Connecticut Avenue. Masks will be required in the Student Health Center if a student is presenting with respiratory symptoms. Anyone who tests positive for COVID should wear a mask when in public or in proximity to others. 

Isolation
If you test positive, please refer to the CDC guidelines regarding isolation. On-campus residents must isolate themselves in their current residence hall room but can leave their room to acquire food and supplies, attend medical appointments, and conduct other necessary activities while masking. On-campus residents can find more information about isolation on-campus here.

Good Health Practices
To support our community and your personal health, you are strongly recommended to stay home when you are sick, get tested, and wear a mask if you are in the proximity of others if you exhibit COVID symptoms or have been exposed to a confirmed case, and wash your hands often.
