The Dean of Students has created a form for determining a student's readiness to return to AU. This document and/or a letter from a care provider stating readiness to return and suggestions for support or on-going treatment to facilitate academic and personal success upon the student's return to American University are to be provided to the Dean of Students Office.

Students must be cleared by the Dean of Students Office to return to classes prior to the first day of class for the semester in which the student wishes to return. It is expected that the student will contact the Dean of Students Office at least one month prior to the start of the semester in which they hope to return.  

Returning From Medical Temporary Leave

• This Readiness to Return form and/or letter from the student's medical provider are to be provided to the Dean of Students Office.

The form and/or letter needs to confirm that the student’s previous challenges have been addressed and should include the medical provider’s recommendations for on-going support or treatment. If on-going support or treatment in recommended, the student will be asked to provide confirmation that arrangements to meet the recommendations are being made.

• Students must be cleared by the Dean of Students office to return to classes prior to the first day of class for the semester in which the student wishes to return. It is expected that the student will contact the Dean of Students Office at least one month prior to the start of the semester in which they hope to return. 
• The Dean of Students office will notify the student’s advisor when the student is cleared to return and may register for classes.
• The Dean of Students office highly recommends that students returning from a medical leave consider purchasing the Tuition Refund Plan.
