Pointing the Farm Bill toward Racial Justice Climate Justice = Racial Justice = Food Justice = Farm Justice
Pointing The Farm Bill toward Racial Justice is an ongoing project under ARPC's Climate, Land, and Environmental Justice focus area. It is rooted in commitment to ethical, reciprocal collaborations with community partners.
The 2024 Pointing the Farm Bill toward Racial Justice toolkit was created by the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund (FSC/LAF) and AU's Antiracist Research & Policy Center as an educational tool for farmers and landowners of color, racial justice advocates, and policymakers. The multimedia document - which includes links to videos and podcasts throughout - provides an overview of the Farm Bill and each of its 12 titles. It looks at the omnibus legislation's racialized implications and opportunities for moving beyond the discrimination that Black, indigenous, and other farmers of color have historically faced, and toward racial justice. It also offers opportunities for deeper and more transformational change in future Farm Bill cycles.
The toolkit comes out of the 2023 Pointing the Farm Bill toward Racial Justice Summit, hosted at AU's Airlie Farm, Capitol Hill, and Eaton DC, which itself marked a culmination of the FSC/LAF Advocacy Institute's two year Farm Bill listening sessions with member farmers, foresters, landowners, and cooperatives. It centers the expertise and lived experience of Federation members, as well as the analysis collectively constructed at the summit on issues ranging from climate justice, food system resilience, fair prices, food sovereignty, trade, land tenure, credit, and farm labor rights.
Additional toolkit and summit partners include the Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center at Alcorn State University and the Berkeley Food Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. Additional experts speaking at the summit, referenced, and linked to in the videos included in the toolkit hail from Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, National Black Food and Justice Alliance, National Family Farm Coalition, Intertribal Agriculture Council, Rural Coalition, and many more.
