Holistic 1:1 Academic AdvisingContact Us
Welcome to First Year Advising Teaching, advising, and supporting students in their first year of college
First Year Advising is a team of professional academic advisors from a variety of diverse backgrounds. We use teaching, advising, and advocacy to empower new students to pursue their continued development in college.
Our team provides holistic 1:1 academic advising for first-year students, emphasizing student learning and engagement both inside and outside of the classroom. Advisors also teach their advisees in a weekly AU Experience 1 course in the fall. This allows students to have consistency through their first semester and offers opportunities to connect with their advisor in class.

First Year Advising Mission Statement
The mission of the First Year Advising office is to use teaching, advising, and advocacy to empower students to pursue their continued development in college.
WE STRIVE TO ACHIEVE OUR MISSION THROUGH THE FOLLOWING
Engagement Focus on student learning and engagement
Teaching Through our role as instructors in the AUx Program we have the opportunity to support student development in AUx1 and AUx2.
Holistic 1:1 Academic Advising
Throughout a student's first year we provide consistency and support as they navigate AU and their academic path. With our students we place an emphasis on advising and coaching the whole student. We go beyond academics and incorporate their social, cultural, psychological and academic adjustment to college in our meetings. We provide the highest level of student service possible, but also recognize the importance of student responsibility. We provide students with all of their options and then support them in making and taking ownership of their decisions and education.
Focus on student learning and engagement
Both inside and outside of the classroom, we want students to be learning and engaging with the campus community. We place emphasis on engagement, knowing that it leads to students thriving.
Teaching
Through our role as instructors in the AUx Program we have the opportunity to support student development in AUx1 and AUx2. In AUx1 we see the students each week in class, which allows us to get to know our students on a deeper and more consistent basis to provide effective support and interventions. In AUx2, we provide a solid foundation in understanding systems of power, privilege, and inequality while engaging in dialogue across difference. Together, the two semesters provide students with the necessary skills and support as they become a part of an engaged community of learners.
