Funding your master's education

The following scholarships are designed to help make education affordable for current IPCR students.

The Pat and Jerry Mische Family Scholarship

Each year, the Mische Scholarship will be awarded to an African student in the IPCR master's program who shows the potential to make a significant contribution to peace and conflict resolution in Africa.The award will be granted in the fall semester for the student's tuition expenses in the following semester. Students can apply for $1,500.

Criteria:

  • Exhibit leadership potential related to work in peace, justice, and/or ecological integrity
  • Show potential to make a significant contribution to peace and conflict resolution in Africa
  • Demonstrate high academic achievement
  • Demonstrate financial need

This scholarship will be offered in the Fall semester.

The Abdul Aziz Said Graduate Scholarship

The Abdul Aziz Said Scholarship was created in honor of Professor Said's 50 years of teaching in the School of International Service, which included 11 years of service as the Founding Director of the International Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) program. This scholarship is awarded to an IPCR graduate student entering his/her second year (or beyond) who aspires to Professor Said's lifelong commitment to global peace, intercultural understanding, and promotion of human rights and human dignity through the pursuit of public service and social justice as core foundations of peace. The scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $5,000 to two students.

Criteria:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the principles of peace, intercultural understanding, human rights, and social justice through activities that promote these and other aspects of peace, past and present, through service within and outside the American University community
  • Member of a historically under-represented or marginalized group (such as a domestic student of color)
  • High scholastic and academic achievement (minimum of 3.5 cumulative GPA)
  • Entering his/her second year (or beyond) in the IPCR Program in the Fall semester and must have at least 6 credits completed
  • Demonstrate financial need

This scholarship will be offered in the Spring semester.

The Charles O. and Margaret Lerche Travel Grant

This grant was created in honor of Charles O. Lerche, former professor of international relations and former SIS Dean, and is awarded to a continuing IPCR graduate student. Grants are intended to provide support to outstanding IPCR graduate students pursuing practical learning experiences or research in the field of International Peace and Conflict Resolution and American peace policy. Grants may be applied toward international or domestic travel related to SRP/thesis research, internship experience, or conference attendance. The grant is intended for students who, without funding, may otherwise be unable to travel. Multiple grants will be awarded per year, depending on the funding requested in submitted applications.

Criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in the IPCR MA program
  • Has maintained a 3.5 GPA
  • Has completed a minimum of 9 credit hours
  • Demonstrated promise in their scholastic achievements and their commitment to IPCR principles (social justice, peace education, service)

This scholarship will be offered in the Spring semester.
