Art and Theater Safety

American University offers high-quality curriculum in visual and performing arts, but these programs can present complex safety challenges. EH&S strives to ensure that members of the AU community can pursue these opportunities safely. Details of the Art and Theater Safety Program can be found below. All of these topics will be covered during annual art and theater space audits.

Training

EH&S provides online safety training covering topics such as Hand and Power Tool Safety, Flammable Liquid Safety, Hazard Communication, and more. In addition, individual shop managers should provide and document equipment- and procedure-specific training to personnel.

Shop Safety

All hazardous processes should be documented in the form of SOPs, and these should be readily available to all personnel who will perform these processes. Personnel should also keep shop areas clean and tidy, maintain tools in good working order, and utilize machine guarding whenever possible.

Electrical and Fire Safety

Avenues of emergency egress must be maintained at all times. In addition, fire extinguishers must be available, accessible, and charged. Flammable liquids should be stored in appropriate cabinets when not in use.

Chemical Safety and Hazardous Waste

An inventory of hazardous chemicals must be available to all personnel. Moreover, hazardous chemicals and gas cylinders must be handled and stored appropriately. Hazardous chemical waste must be collected per these requirements. EH&S will collect hazardous waste upon request. Finally, personnel should consider area ventilation and personal protective equipment to prevent dangerous chemical exposures.

Emergencies

Personnel should know what to do and have appropriate supplies in case of a hazardous chemical spill, evacuation, or injury.
